Review: Maybelline Eye Studio Lasting Drama Gel Eyeliner

I had never tried a gel eyeliner before this and I was interested in giving one a go after getting fed up of all my pencil eyeliners smudging after half an hour of wear, and my liquid eyeliners flaking or having rubbish applicators. I didn't want to get a really expensive one in case I didn't like it, so I did my research and asked my grandparents to get me the Maybelline Eye Studio Lasting Drama Gel Eyeliner (try saying that five times over) in Black for Christmas.

I have to say, I don't think I will be going back to pencil or liquid eyeliners any time soon! I had seen so many people on blogger saying that gel eyeliners are much easier to apply than liquid, and I found it hard to believe, but it's true! This glides on so smoothly and the brush that comes with it is actually quite good, it is thin and quite stiff so that you can draw a precise line, perfect if you're like me and you like to wing your eyeliner. You have to make sure you clean the brush regularly though, otherwise the gel will dry on it making it hard, which can feel scratchy on your eyelids.

I really like the packaging of this product; the frosted glass pot makes it look more expensive than it actually is. The pot makes it seem like there is more product than there actually is though, however, this doesn't really bother me as a tiny amount of product goes a long way, so I think that it will be a while before I need to repurchase.

The formula is quite thick and creamy, and it is well pigmented so you only need to dab your brush in to the product to be able to line one eye.
This eyeliner claims to get you through 24 hours of wear. Personally, I don't know anybody who would wear their make-up for 24 hours, but I definitely think that this will stay on for as long as you need it to. Once it dries after application it doesn't budge, unless you excessively rub your eyes. However, it comes off easily with a bit of make-up remover.

Maybelline also claims that this eyeliner is:
  • Safe for sensitive eyes and ophthalmologist-tested
• Contact lens safe

One of the problems that I see people talking about regarding gel eyeliners is that they can dry up. I can't really comment on that as I have only had this product for around a month, but I can report that it doesn't seem to have dried up at all so far, so just make sure you screw the lid back on tightly after each application!

This gel eyeliner usually costs about £7.99 in Boots and Superdrug, however it is currently on offer in Superdrug for just £5.99, saving you £2.00! I don't know how long this offer will last so I would definitely purchase it now if you want to try it out! It is also available in three other shades; Brown, Charcoal and Eggplant.

Have you tried Maybelline's gel eyeliner or a gel eyeliner from another brand? Do you rate them more than pencil and liquid eyeliners?

    1. Hmm, your view is actually quite interesting haha, I do find that I have had to layer the eyeliner up a little if I want a very dramatic look... I think it is just right for every day though :) Thank you! x

  2. I bought this a last week and I've just about got used to using gel as I'm like you and have always pencil eyeliner. Definitely agree with your review, I think the longest I've worn this eyeliner is about 10 hours and it lasted that, i'm not sure why anybody would need an eyeliner to last 24 hours haha (: xoxo

    1. I don't know why it took me so long to try out a gel liner haha, and I know, I can't imagine anybody needing that haha, at least the thought is there though :P x

    1. It might take a bit of practice if you're not used to applying eyeliner, but I'd definitely say give it a go anyway, see if you like it, especially as it is on offer right now! :) x

  6. I got this in the summer and would never go back to liquid. Whenever i used a liquid eyeliner I always ended up with too thick a line but with this i can get it spot on though.

Ive just had a break from using eyeliner and winging it out and i seem to have lost my knack so i think i need to get practicing again!!

    1. I found liquid eyeliners really hard to correct aswell because they would just smudge everywhere :/ Aww aha, I am also trying to perfect my winged eyeliner after not doing it for a while! x

  8. I bought this a few months back and mine still hasn't dried up! However, it does tend to smudge on my eye lids towards the end of the day, so it definitely wouldn't last 24 hours on my oily lids!

  12. I've always been tempted to get a gel liner! This one looks gorgeous although I do like my eyeliner BLACK so reading the replies etc has dampened my enthusiasm for this a little bit.

    1. Aww, well I personally think this one is quite black, and it can always be layered, but I guess it would take some swatches of your own or a few more reviews to decide if you would like it :) x
