10 tips to beautiful skin ready for Valentine’s day

Yes, Valentine’s day falls in winter when you can be looking and feeling just a little bit… well, dull. But here’s how to get your glow back and have beautiful skin when February 14th rolls around.

1. Find a skincare routine that works for you
Start by getting advice from a professional if you can – book a consultation at one of the skincare counters in a local store, for example – but remember to work from there towards a skincare routine you can actually live with. If you know you won’t exfoliate, cleanse, tone and then moisturise every day, don’t plan to – just pick something that fits into your day and is good to your skin.

2. Settle on some products that work
Everyone’s skin is different, so part of the battle is choosing products that work for you. Once you find them, stick to them – don’t make your skin deal with you chopping and changing all the time, trying out products that aren’t the right balance for your skin type.

3. Always remove make-up before bed
Yes, even if you’re very tired or you’ve had a few glasses of wine. Make-up can clog pores and dry your skin out, so there’s no excuse for hitting the sack with your war-paint still in place.

4. Exfoliate regularly
Build up of dead cells can leave the surface of your skin looking dull and lifeless, so exfoliate either daily or weekly (depending on your regime and your skin type) to get your skin glowing again. The best time to exfoliate is in the morning after the skin has been resting and repairing itself overnight – get a good exfoliating scrub and work it in circles into your skin. Or use a clean, warm, damp washcloth and allow the material of the cloth to gently work away dead cells. Then simply rinse with warm water.

5. Cleanse
Skin needs cleansing, but be careful not to over-do it: once a day is plenty. Remove make-up with a proper make-up remover first; then find a good cleanser that works with your skin. Splash your skin with warm water to loosen dirt, apply cleanser, and rinse with more warm water and gently pat dry with a clean towel.

6. Moisturise and use sunscreen
Again, the key is finding a moisturiser that works with your skin - whether it’s prone to being dry or oily it will still benefit from moisturising – and not to overdo it. Your skin will tell you when you’ve got both of those things right. And either pick a moisturiser that has SPF, or mix a little sunscreen into your preferred brand – even on overcast days or in winter exposure will age your skin.

7. Eat your five a day
Skin is the biggest organ in the body, so of course diet plays and important part in its health. Eating your five a day of fruit and veg will help give your skin that extra glow, loading you up on antioxidants such as vitamins C and E, and beta-carotene.

8. Drink water
We all know we should drink more water than we do, but if good skin is high on your agenda it’s a must. Water helps carry toxins out of your system, so switch out one of those glasses of wine for a glass of water, or add herbal teas to your daily intake to help get more water into your system.

9. Sleep well and get some exercise
Working stressful jobs or partying hard take it out of you all round, and your skin suffers too. Try to make sure to get your eight hours sleep a night as often as possible, and fit some exercise into your schedule to help increase blood flow to the skin for that healthy glow.

10. Book a massage
Another way to improve blood-flow around the whole body and help shift toxins is to have a massage; and what better way to prepare yourself for Valentine’s than with a massage – for the good of your health, of course.
